The Roney Plaza: forty years as the grandest address on the beach.

In February 1926 developer N.B.T. Roney opened the Roney Plaza at 23rd and Collins, a Mediterranean palace with a tower inspired by Seville's Giralda, and it instantly became THE place to winter in America. Cabana colonies, orchestras by the pool, gossip columnists broadcasting from the garden. If you were famous between the twenties and the fifties, sooner or later you checked in.

Then the beach moved on. The grand old hotel faded through the fifties, closed its doors in May 1968, and was demolished before the year was out. Today you can stand at 23rd and Collins and see almost nothing that remembers it. That is how fast this city reinvents itself.
