On September 18, 1926, at the very peak of the great Florida land boom, a monster hurricane came ashore over Miami Beach with almost no warning. When the calm eye passed over, thousands walked outside thinking it was finished. The back half of the storm arrived minutes later. Hundreds of lives were lost, damage ran past one hundred million dollars in 1926 money, and the land boom that had built the beach ended overnight.

But here is the part the postcards skip: the rebuild is what made this place iconic. Through the 1930s the beach filled with the boldest new architecture of its moment, the hotels the world now calls the Art Deco District. No 1926 storm, no Deco skyline.
