In the 1970s the pastel Art Deco district was set to be torn down. Barbara Baer Capitman founded the Miami Design Preservation League, fought City Hall hotel by hotel, and in 1979 won the first 20th-century National Register district in the country. The colors of South Beach exist because she refused to back down.
